Our Core Curriculum

The decision to start homeschooling wasn’t made in haste. I had been thinking about it for years before we actually committed to it.
So ultimately, we went into it with eyes wide open.
I was aware that there were things Rhythm might miss out on, like solid structure, predictable schedules, the comfort of knowing exactly what happens each hour of each day.
But I also knew there were things she’d gain that, in my heart, felt even more valuable, like the chance to be guided by her own instinct, curiosity, and desire.
The space to learn how to trust herself.
The longer we homeschool, the more I see that belief…her belief in herself, and mine in myself is the real core curriculum.
Because belief shapes reality.
If you believe you can - you will.
If you believe you can’t - you won’t.
Those who believe they can’t rarely begin.
Those who believe they can never stop.
People with a core belief that they “can’t” will get often get stuck at the first step because they can’t see beyond the challenges of beginning. But those who believe they can are already living in the end result. Their eyes are set on the thing they’re becoming, not the clumsiness of the starting point.
I’m watching this lesson unfold in real time inside our home, and honestly it feels more powerful to me than seeing an A+ written on the top of a math test.
Here’s an example of our real life experience.
.
I got a pottery wheel for Christmas. Not even three weeks ago. I can still barely center clay without it wobbling itself into a sad, lopsided lump.... But somehow… I’ve already decided that I’ll start making my own porcelain, and eventually I’ll master working with my own recipe, Porcelain happens to be the hardest, most temperamental clay of all.
When I sit down at the wheel, I don’t see the mess I’m making today with store bought clay. All I see is the pure potential of my future creations. My husband is the same way, we see the end before the beginning has really even started, and we just don’t give up until our reality matches our inner vision. To some, that’s considered crazy, to us it’s the only way to truly live.
And then yesterday, Rhythm picked up a crochet hook for the very first time. She could barely manage a single stitch. It was loose and uneven and ...absolutely adorable.
Today, less than 24 hours later, she looked at me with total confidence and said, “Mom, you won’t have to shop for my clothes much longer because I’m going to make my own…she showed me the pictures of inspiration and the videos that would help her to get there.
and here’s them most important thing…
The point isn’t whether she’ll actually crochet herself a wardrobe by summer. The point is that she believes in herself enough to believe she can.
That’s the real power I want her to carry through life.
A child who trusts her own instincts will take risks.
A child who believes in her own ability will try new things.
A child who feels capable at the starting line will always make it further than the child who never begins.
And homeschooling, for us, isn’t necessarily about academics. It’s about building that inner knowing...the kind that instills confidence, the belief that …I can figure this out… one step, one stitch, one messy lump of clay at a time!
In the end, the greatest education any of us can receive is the belief that we can shape our lives the way we choose. whether that’s learning math, throwing a bowl, or crocheting a future pair of handmade pants.
And that is what makes this journey feel worth it…to us anyway.
Thanks for following along, and being a part of our story.
